ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Education, Mother Teresa Women’s University, established in 1985 concentrates on its multi various functions viz, teaching, research, consultancy, and extension activities and also contributes for the holistic development of the University. The department is declared as “Centre for Excellence’ by Higher Education Department by  Government of Tamil Nadu. [G.O (Ms).No. 80 dated 28.05.2012]. Its special focus is on Teacher Education, Special Education [MR] Techno pedagogy, Professional Ethics and Counseling. The Department strives to achieve equal status between genders through its enlarged role in area of women’s empowerment by formal, informal and non formal education for girls, women and differently abled.

The Department has served as University Grants Commission RCC- Refresher Course Centre and conducted Refresher Course in Women’s Education. At present it is the Nodal Agency of MHRD, New Delhi in monitoring SSA and RMSA in 17 districts of Tamil Nadu .

Major research projects completed by the department:

*Department has also received financial assistance from Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India for the following projects.

i.  Evaluation of Education of Tribal Girls in Tamil Nadu – by Prof. K. Subbamal, Dr,M.Punithambal and Dr. A. Kalaimathy.
ii. Evaluation of IASE of CTE in Tamil Nadu - – by Prof. K. Subbamal, Dr,M.Punithambal and Dr. A. Kalaimathy.
iii.  Evaluation of the contribution of  DIET in Teacher Education- Tamil Nadu – by Dr.K. Nirmala
iv.  Gender Studies as an academic discipline in Tamil Nadu, since 1986 – by     Dr. V. Rajeswari.

*Capacity Building on Action Research among Block Resource Teachers By Dr.V.Rajeswari, Sponsored by Government of Tamil Nadu( SSA).

*Skill Development programme for Higher Secondary School Students in Kodaikanal sanctioned by- Ministry of Science and Technology to Dr.K.Nirmala (DST). 

Members of NAAC and NCTE

  • Prof. Dr. K. Subbammal [Retd] has severed as Chairperson, Peer Team Coordinator and other member of the staff have also visited as Visiting Team Member of NCTE
  • Prof. Dr.V.Rajeswari is serving as a Peer Team co-ordinator and Member of NAAC.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

  • The Population Education Resource Centre sanctioned and funded by UGC   and the message was taken to the masses.
  • Offered Remedial Teaching Programme for minority students sponsored by UGC from 2005 to 2007 - Dr. V.Rajeswari - Coordinator. Any person belonging to the under privileged and minority communities doing any regular course in any college or correspondence course benefited with the educational assistance
  • Offered coaching classes for the non creamy layer students for various Recruitment Examination through Equal Opportunity Cell funded by University Grants Commission and  7 candidates have cleared NET/JRF.
  • Carried out Special Education Project under Merged Scheme funded by U G C
  • Consumer Development Cell carried out Consumer Awareness programmes among the public funded by Civil Service Department, Dindigul

INTELLECTUAL PROGRAMMES

  • Workshops on Low Cost Kitchen Gardening and Preparation of Low Cost Educational Aids Training Program Sponsored by Entrepreneur Development Cell, Mother Teresa Women’s University
  • The department organizes International and National Seminars, Conferences and Workshops, Training Programme and Faculty Development Programmes  every year.

  1. Conducted a Two Day International Conference on “Learning Environment for Excellence in Education” in collaboration with SRM University, Chennai on 24th and 25th January, 2014
  2. Conducted a Two Day TANSCHE Sponsored National Conference On “Educating Women: A Development Imperative”-WEDIMP 12 in February 2012
  3. Conducted a Two Day National conference on Paradigm Shift in Education in the  Present Scenario – PSEP” on 20th and 21st February 2011
  4. 4. Conducted a Two Day NAAC Sponsored National Seminar on “Quality Assurance and sustainability with reference to  Higher  Education” in April, 2012

Curriculum Development Cell:  Govt. of TamilNadu Funded Project         

The Professor and Head of the Department of Education is the Director of the Curriculum Development Cell of Mother Teresa Women’s University and an Assistant Professor of Education Department is the Coordinator. Fifty Two Programs are organized with the Financial Assistance from Government of TamilNadu  for enriching the curriculum in collaboration with the PG Departments of the University, Affiliated Colleges, autonomous Colleges and Constituent colleges of the University and prepared Broad Based Curriculum.
