About the Department
The Department of Sociology was established in 1987 with the vision of creating a world of equity and social justice. Initially focused on research, the department began offering Post Graduate programmes in Sociology. In 2012, it expanded to include the Master of Social Work programme with specializations in Medical & Psychiatric Social Work, Community Development, and Human Resource Management.
Over the past 30 years, it has guided UG, PG, MSW, and doctoral research in Sociology and Social Work.
Emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches, the department promotes research, classroom engagement, and outreach activities. Students are trained in skills like leadership, social responsibility, and advocacy, with opportunities to work while learning. Collaboration with NGOs, Villages (Rural and Tribal), SHG's in Tamilnadu, Schools, Hospitals, Companies and Industries, Universities and voluntary organizations supports socially relevant fieldwork, outreach and Extension activities
The department prepares students to be interdisciplinary thinkers who are socially conscious and capable of addressing vital social issues.
