Department of Sociology
Mother Teresa Women’s University
Established in 1987
About the Department
The Department of Sociology was established in 1987 with the vision of creating a world of equity and social justice. Initially focused on research, the department began offering Post Graduate programmes in Sociology. In 2012, it expanded to include the Master of Social Work programme with specializations in Medical & Psychiatric Social Work, Community Development, and Human Resource Management.
The department also offers a UGC-sponsored PG Diploma in Human Rights Education and runs a Counselling Center to assist students. It coordinates various UGC-funded courses and activities under the Centre for Gandhian Studies. Over the past 30 years, it has guided UG, PG, MSW, and doctoral research in Sociology, Social Work, and Women’s Studies.
Emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches, the department promotes research, classroom engagement, and outreach activities. Students are trained in skills like leadership, social responsibility, and advocacy, with opportunities to work while learning. Collaboration with NGOs and voluntary organizations supports socially relevant fieldwork and outreach efforts.
The department prepares students to be interdisciplinary thinkers who are socially conscious and capable of addressing vital social issues.
